Capital’s traffic signalling system transferred to the cloud

London’s traffic signal network has been successfully transferred to a cloud based system.

In collaboration with Yunex Traffic Limited, Transport for London (TfL) has shifted more than 16,000 traffic indicators and 1,500 pedestrian crossings to the Real Time Optimiser system. The transition took two weeks and resulted in no delays or obstructions to the city’s road network.

Compared to the previous system, which has been in place for more than thirty years, TfL says RTO will improve journey times, traffic flow, and responses to accidents, and allows for smoother management of the city’s old, complex road layout.

Carl Eddleston, TfL’s director of network management and resilience, said: “London’s road network plays a vital role in enabling millions of journeys each day and we’re determined to ensure that people can walk, cycle, take the bus and drive as safely and efficiently as possible.”

TfL says that the new system will also be helpful in traffic incident response and prevention. With RTO, TfL’s control centre can respond to road incidents and ensure that all travelers can navigate the obstruction safely, whether they are traveling by car, bicycle, or on foot.

A spokesman said: “Improved road management is integral to its Vision Zero goal of eliminating all deaths and serious injuries on the network.”
