Cockroaches found in sushi at restaurant

An oriental restaurant has temporarily closed after inspectors found cockroaches near to where sushi was prepared.
Bento, in Lee High Road, received the worst possible score of 0 for food safety.
An inspector from Lewisham council also found mice excrement on the kitchen floor and on shelves when they visited in October last year.
Staff told the official they defrosted chicken by plunging it into cold water in the kitchen sink and leaving it overnight. Pots and lids were stored outside.
The restaurant, which specialises in Japanese and Chinese food, was found to be in breach of 18 food hygiene rules.
Inspectors ordered it to take immediate action to improve or face getting shut down.
According to the restaurant’s social media, Bento closed for refurbishment at the end of October, but appears not to have reopened since.
The inspector found that a sheet with details about ingredients which could cause an allergic reaction was incomplete.
Meanwhile staff couldn’t list the allergens in satay sauce.
The restaurant’s menu told customers that its food was free of genetically modified (GM) ingredients, but the council official found kitchen staff cooking with oil containing GM soya.
Phone calls to Bento went unanswered when we tried to contact the restaurant.
