Construction work set to begin on a Deptford section of Cycleway

By Grainne Cuffe, local democracy reporter

Work on a section of a 10km cycle highway is set to start in Lewisham later this month.

The work in Evelyn Street, Deptford, suffered a year-long delay because of the pandemic.

It forms part of a £54 million project dubbed Cycleway 4 to create a segregated route between Tower Bridge and Greenwich. Cyclists already make about 3,500 daily trips along the route.

The project is also expected to improve safety for pedestrians.

Construction began in July 2019 on the sections of cycleway between Tooley Street and Jamaica Road, and the Rotherhithe roundabout in Southwark. The 3.6km section was completed in September 2020.

In Spring 2020, TfL started work on the stretch between Deptford Church Street and Creek Road, but that was halted because of the pandemic. Work on that stretch started again that autumn.

Work on the Creek Road section of the route finished in Greenwich in May 2021, while TfL introduced an experimental scheme along Tooley Street and Duke Street Hill to extend cycling facilities.

TfL, which expects the work will be finished in Spring 2022, will also be planting trees and improving public spaces along the route.

According to TfL: “Cycleway 4 will create a clearer and safer route for cycling on roads in Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Deptford and Greenwich.

“New pedestrian crossings and improved public spaces will make these areas more pleasant to live, work, shop and spend time in.

“Our plan allows for the area’s future growth. Cycleway 4 will help connect communities along the route by linking important amenities and facilities.”

Most of the work in Evelyn Street will take place on weekdays between 8am and 6pm and on Saturdays between 8am and 1pm.

“This project is part of our programme of works to create greener and more attractive streets that are safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

“We will keep residents and businesses along the route informed as we progress through stages of construction by sending letters in advance of the works,” TfL added.
