Council announce £1million investment into climate change projects

A council has announced it will invest £1million in climate change projects to combat flooding and overheating in the borough.

The announcement by Southwark council comes in line with the Climate Resilience and Adaptation Strategy, which has recently been adopted by cabinet.

An autumn consultation for the strategy heard from residents and businesses in the borough about the impact of climate change that are already being felt.

The council has since created an action plan to build on resident feedback, including “future-proofing” the borough’s buildings, streets and critical infrastructure to prepare them for rising temperatures and improving air quality and biodiversity.

Councillor James McAsh, cabinet member for the climate emergency, clean air and streets, said: “We must prepare for an uncertain future.

“We cannot sit back and wait for the worst to happen before taking urgent action to protect local people – particularly the most vulnerable – from the real impacts of a changing climate.”
