Croydon drivers could face fines as cameras are set to be added to Low Traffic Neighbourhoods

South Norwood and Selhurst drivers could soon be fined for driving through certain areas.
Croydon council wants to install traffic cameras in the Albert Road and Holmesdale Road areas.
The cameras would replace temporary road blocks which were put in place in May 2020.
Known as Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTN), they were installed without consultation after the Government called on councils to encourage walking and cycling during the pandemic’s first lockdown.
Now the council wants to make the changes more permanent by extending the schemes for another 18 months – with traffic cameras instead of planters blocking the roads.
If the cameras are introduced, people living within the area would be able to apply for a permit to drive through them – emergency vehicles, taxis and Dial-a-ride services will be allowed to drive through without being fined.
In the Selhurst area cameras are proposed for Holmesdale Road at the junction with Park Road, Elm Park Road at the junction with South Norwood Hill and another in Holmesdale Road near Oliver Grove.
The South Norwood scheme would be between Portland Road and Love Lane with cameras in Albert Road and bollards in Apsley and Belfast Road.
Councillor Muhammad Ali, cabinet member for Sustainable Croydon, said: “We set up these schemes in response to requests from residents who wanted a safer, quieter and less-polluted local environment, and these schemes are already encouraging more active travel and reducing congestion.”
Consultation on the two proposals is open until August 24. After this closes it would need to be approved by the Traffic Management Advisory Committee and last for up to 18 months before being put in place late autumn.
