Family leave iconic pub after quarter of a century due to uncertainty over Covid-19

Covid uncertainty has meant the end of an era for a well-known venue and nightclub.

The Norbury, in London Road, Norbury, run by the Dempsey family, will not reopen due to uncertainty over Covid restrictions.

Its iconic giant Guinness signage, including the Guinness smiling pints and Guinness time clock, have become a local landmark and meeting point.

A statement from the Dempsey family said: “The Norbury has been a totally unique and special venue to us.

“We feel we have taken The Norbury to the top, and 25 years on, with heavy hearts, we believe it is time to call last orders.

“Given the current situation, with so much uncertainty around late night venues and the ongoing restrictions, it simply would not be viable to reopen.

“We would like to thank all who have supported us over the years, from the DJs, bands and staff who have all helped make it possible.”

The family bought The Norbury in 1995, when it was a derelict hotel. They have since transformed it into a popular late-night venue with a large sports and music bar, two nightclubs and function facilities.

The venue has hosted many big acts, including Irish band The Wolfe Tones, and chart topper Jocelyn Brown.

But it is not all over for the family who have hopes of opening another large venue in more certain times, “to bring another exciting chapter in late-night entertainment when the time is right. We hope to see some familiar faces there.”
