Cycling group challenges developer over Lewisham Shopping Centre plans
A cycling group has called on developers running the revamp of Lewisham Shopping Centre to “drastically improve” green space for active travel.
In October 2024, LandsecU+I submitted a planning application for an ambitious development of Lewisham Shopping Centre.
The plans, which came together after three years of consultation, include 1,719 homes along Molesworth Street, a large family park featuring 300 trees and a children’s playground.
But, Lewisham Cyclists have hit out at developers for the lack of cycling space, with plans showing most of the site would be pedestrianised.
Coordinator of Lewisham Cyclists, Alex Raha, said: “The proposed new layout offers the potential for new cycling routes east-west across the town centre, and this is a great opportunity to improve active travel.
“That’s why we are very concerned that such shared use routes haven’t been included.
“Making the development cycle-friendly will reduce congestion and pollution, and is essential for new residents moving in.”
The current proposal would mean cyclists have to dismount on arrival at the site where there will be more than 1,000 secure cycle parking spaces, Jon Watson, development director at Landsec, said.
Cyclists will have to walk through the new shopping area on foot, or “push their bikes if just passing through”.
Lewisham Cyclists is urging Lewisham council and Transport for London (TfL) to work with Landsec to “dramatically improve space” for active travel in and around the site when they redevelop it.
Mr Watson said: “The initial proposal is subject to discussions with Lewisham council and TfL, taking into account comments from groups and community members.”
Lewisham council said it could not comment whilst the planning application is live.
Mr Watson said: “We’re passionate about our plans to redevelop Lewisham Shopping Centre, which are set to redefine the town centre and create a new green future for the borough.
“We want to create a pedestrian-friendly environment and promote the use of cycling, walking and public transport in Lewisham, and we have consulted at length on this area and always welcome input from the community.
“Our plans will reconnect the site with the wider town centre, and create better links to, through and around the site for cyclists and pedestrians.
“New 24-hour routes will connect the High Street and market to Molesworth Street and Ravensbourne River and the proposals will reduce congestion and enhance accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.”
The planning application is expected to go before the Planning Committee in due course.
