“Demon” sculpture by artist Damien Hirst could be unveiled on Greenwich Peninsula

A huge headless “demon” sculpture by artist Damien Hirst could be unveiled next to the Emirates Air Line cable car.

The outline of the proposal came before Greenwich council last year, but is now being reported the developer, Knight Dragon, has revealed exactly where it wants the statue to be placed.

The artwork by Mr Hirst, called Demon With Bowl, is 18m high and will stand next to the cable car if signed off by the council’s planning board.

The giant, headless figure was first exhibited in Venice five years ago by the artist, but could soon loom over the Greenwich Peninsula.

Knight Dragon said the location had already been agreed with Transport for London (TfL), according to local website 853.

Knight Dragon has been contacted for comment.

The developer is also leading the plans for building thousands of new homes in the area.

Mr Hirst’s sculpture will be on top of a 0.55m high plinth if plans are signed off.

He already has two artworks on the Greenwich Peninsula, called Mermaid and Hydra & Kali, both close to the O2 arena.

Mr Hirst is reportedly the UK’s richest living artist with his wealth estimated at £292 million by the 2020 Sunday Times Rich List.

Mr Hirst dominated the art scene in the UK in the 1990s, with death being a prominent theme in his work.

He became an overnight sensation in 1991 when he sold an artwork featuring a dead shark preserved in a glass box for £50,000.
