District line is named as worst Tube line of year
The District line has been ranked the worst underground service in 2018.
The service had nearly 200 delays that were longer than 15 minutes – the highest among any Tube line.
The District line has consistently ranked among the worst performing underground services but it took the top spot in 2018.
It is estimated that delays on the District line alone equate to £42 million in lost hourly wages.
Commuter Kirsten Lee, who lives by the District line and relies on public transport to get around, said she almost expected her train to be delayed every day and in fact schedules in the wait time into her daily commute.
She said: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen the expected arrival time the same as the scheduled time. “The delays don’t bother me as much any more – they’ve become a part of my daily routine, but it’s still frustrating sometime.”
The Bakerloo and Northern lines also contributed to the delays in 2018, with 139 and 100 delays respectively, which amounted to a combined wage loss of £46 million.
Over the past decade train delays have consistently gone down every year, however in 2016/17 the average wait time was higher than the previous year.
Transport for London has announced plans to launch a new digital signalling system which could potentially lead to quicker and more frequent services on the District line.
