Families came to celebrate the opening of Brunswick Park’s play area

Families came to celebrate the opening of the council’s quarter of a million pound redevelopment of Brunswick Park’s play area on October 21. The new play area is the result of a resident’s application to Southwark’s Cleaner Greener Safer programme, which put up funds and sourced the additional finance.

The council held consultations which showed that people wanted a fun, imaginative, adventure play area, with lots of variety and an appropriate level of risk, at the Camberwell park.

Other key concerns included safety, seating and picnic tables.

The park reflects all of this and is accessible to children with a range of physical or mental disabilities.

Further to the exciting new play area, a carved wooden sculpture “Boris the Squirrel” is to be commissioned and the community will be invited to decide where his home should be.

Families were joined by councillors Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, and Ian Wingfield, cabinet member for environment and the public realm, and deputy mayor of Southwark Jamille Mohammed.

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for communities, leisure and safety, said: “It’s a real joy to have transformed this area into a bright, fun, lovely space that reflects the needs of the community.

“We have paths for people who like to pass through the square and benches for people to relax and enjoy the enhanced biodiversity, as well as lots of new equipment to keep the children happy.”
