Family brightening up Christmas – and raising money for charity
It’s as traditional a part of Christmas as turkey and stuffing.
Gunaltay Mustafa of Albany Road, Southwark, has for several years gone overboard with his outdoor Christmas decorations to raise money for the Anthony Nolan charity.
It gave his son, Alex, a life-saving bone marrow transplant, which saved his life.
His sister Jade said: “We want to make this year the biggest year yet to raise money for this amazing charity. We have set-up a Facebook page as well and we have so far raised in total £1,300.
“We have also got a rolling raffle with friends and family who own small businesses donating prizes which has been amazing. The lights will remain on until December 31 as normal and so all donations we can get up until then will be amazing.”
Her brother Alex was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was just three years old and underwent chemotherapy for a period of three years.
Although the treatment was initially successful, Alex suffered a relapse four years later and was given just a two per cent chance of survival.
It was at this point that Anthony Nolan stepped in, finding Alex, now 11, a match and giving him the transplant.
The Anthony Nolan charity helps people who are suffering from blood cancers by finding them life-saving matches and also conducts research into stem cell matching and transplants.
