Family of Zhe Wang break silence after tragic death of ‘kind and gentle girl’

The family of Zhe Wang, a student at Goldsmiths University who was killed last month, have spoken out for the first time since her death.

An investigation was launched after police were called to reports of a stabbing at a property in Manor Park, Hither Green at arounf 11.15pm on March 20.

Emergency services forced entry to the address, where they found Ms Wang injured inside. She died at the scene shortly afterwards.

In a statement published on Goldsmiths’ website, Ms Wang’s family said: “Zhe was a kind and gentle girl who sought knowledge and advancement, and was extremely gifted in languages, proficient in five languages.

“Our family loves and misses Zhe dearly.

“Zhe’s unexpected death has touched the hearts of countless people and is a tragedy for the whole family.

“What is touching is that the school gave the family care in the immediate instance and provided a lot of help for this time to come to the UK, a loving, humanistic school.

“Finally, I hope that the school can give more attention and protection to international students.

“Thank you to every teacher and student to participate in the commemorative activities, Zhe will be surrounded by love and thought.”

Ms Wang had been studying an MA in creative writing and education at Goldsmiths University.

Dr Francis Gilbert, head of the MA in creative writing and education, said: “The Department of Educational Studies is devastated by the tragic death of their wonderful student Zhe Wang, who was so creative, so full of life, and so erudite.

“We would like to share our condolences to her family for their heartbreaking loss.

“Zhe had produced some wonderful work on the MA Creative Writing and Education, which she was studying.

“She had great plans for her future, aiming to publish her work. We are taking steps to publish some of this, and memories of her, in a forthcoming anthology.

“We miss Zhe deeply, and she will be so warmly remembered by her fellow students and colleagues here at Goldsmiths.”

Joshua Michals, 24, of Lewisham, was charged with her murder on March 22. He appeared in custody at Bromley Magistrates Court on March 23 and at the Old Bailey on March 26 .

Police believe the defendant and victim knew each other.

Michals, a US national living in Deptford, is next due at the Old Bailey in June. A trial date has been set for January 2025.
