Firefighters called after overheating oil in lift creates smoke hazard
Around 20 people were led to safety by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus after heavy smoke began pouring into a block of flats on Sherwood Gardens, Bermondsey.
Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were mobilised at around 7.30am on Saturday.
Several flats and the basement suffered smoke damage. The smoke is believed to have been caused by overheating hydraulic oil in a lift. The incident was over for firefighters shortly before 9am.
Firefighters from Millwall, Poplar, Shadwell and Whitechapel fire stations attended the scene.
