Firefighters rescue 27 people from flat fire

Firefighters have rescued 27 people from a flat fire in a four-storey residential block this afternoon.

Six fire engines and about 40 firefighters tackled the blaze in The Downs, Wimbledon.

Most of a fourth-floor flat in a four-storey residential block was damaged by the fire.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has confirmed that there have been no reports of any injuries.

A spokesman from the LFB said: “A road closure is likely to remain in place along a section of The Downs into the early afternoon while crews remain at the scene.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

The LFB was called at around 11.30am and the fire was brought under control by around 12.30pm.

Crews from Wimbledon, New Malden, Wandsworth, Mitcham and surrounding fire stations have all attended the scene.
