Firefighters rescue three women from balcony

Firefighters rescued three women from the balcony of a house after a blaze broke out on the building’s first floor in the early hours this morning.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to the fire at a semi-detached house in Dagnall Park, Selhurst, just after midnight.

Crews rescued the three women from a first-floor balcony using a ladder. All three were taken to hospital by London Ambulance service crews.

Half of the first floor was damaged by the flames.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by a candle.

Crews from Croydon, Woodside and Norbury fire stations brought the fire under control by around half past midnight.

A London fire brigade (LFB) spokesman said: “Candles are one of the most common causes of fire. It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from anything else that can easily catch alight.

“Firefighters recommend that you have a look at our online Home Fire Safety Checker to make sure there are no hidden hazards in your home.

“It only takes a few minutes to get tailored advice to keep yourself and loved ones safe from fire.”
