Firefighters tackle blaze that ‘destroyed’ second floor of pub causing roof to collapse

Firefighters fought a blaze that “destroyed” the second floor and roof of a derelict pub early this morning.

Eight fire engines and about 60 firefighters tackled the fire in a derelict pub in St James’s Road in Croydon.

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said that the “whole of the second floor” and the roof of the building were destroyed by fire, resulting in a roof collapse.

The brigade did not report any injuries.

Firefighters used 32 metre tall turntable ladders as a water tower to tackle the fire from above.

The Brigade’s 999 control officers received their first call to the fire at around 5.45am.

In total, they received 10 calls to the blaze.

Fire crews from Woodside, Croydon, Forest Hill and surrounding fire stations were at the scene and the fire was under control by around 8.30.

A spokeswoman from the LFB said: “The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
