First stage of regeneration to Battersea Power Station completed

The first stage of redevelopment of Battersea power station has been completed to accommodate several restaurants, shops and more than 1,000 new residents.

The site is undergoing major changes which include the building of a new town centre, and its Circus West Village has attracted more than one million visitors since it was opened in 2017.

The regeneration of the power station is expected to inject £26bn into the local economy and, so far, it has delivered more than 150 apprentices.

Anthony Ocansey, one of the current apprentices, said: “Working on the regeneration of Battersea Power Station has been a challenge, but an exciting and rewarding one.

“My aim is to get to the highest level in the electrics sector and I am heading in the right direction as I have already been made supervisor on completion of my qualification.”

The project has already proved to be hugely beneficial for businesses and it is also developing communal spaces to include facilities for family entertainment, yoga&fitness, theatre, comedy and more.

The power station was decommissioned more than 30 years ago and was declared a heritage site. Since then it had become a tourist site visited by more than 40,000 people.

Sam, a visitor, said: “My stepmother and I got a place on a tour of the Power Station and by the end of it, I was slightly tongued-tied in awe of the privilege of witnessing a building of such history, significance, and
import in a state of incredible vulnerability.

“Truly it was an awesome experience.”

This project also includes an extension to the Northern line to include two new stations in South London.

The structural renovation of the power station will enable it to be opened to the public in 2021.
