First stage of Woolwich Leisure Centre and homes development under way

The first stage of work on a new sports and leisure facility in Woolwich is under way.

And making their high-vis presence felt at the Viscount House site in General Gordon Square this week were several Greenwich councillors to see how demolition of existing buildings is progressing.

Construction is expected to start in the spring.

The promised centre with a pool, gym and spa will be linked to 482 new homes – 168 classified as ‘affordable’ – a commercial space and a community square in the heart of Woolwich town centre.

Planning permission was granted in September.

Cllr Anthony Okereke, leader of the council, said: “These facilities are at the heart of our investment in the town centre, alongside the refurbishment of Tramshed Theatre and improving public areas around Powis Street and Beresford Square.”

Cllr Aidan Smith, cabinet member for regeneration, said the project would benefit the community to the tune of 140 construction jobs as well as providing apprenticeships and training opportunities.
