Flower power date as Lewisham prepares to celebrate its blooms

Green-fingered residents are being invited to showcase their flowers, imagination and gardening skills in the latest edition of Lewisham in Bloom – with entries accepted from June 12.

The competition recognises the importance of gardening and floral displays in the borough for physical and mental health, increased biodiversity and good environmental sustainability practices to make Lewisham a greener, brighter and healthy place to live.

Entries are welcomed from residents, community groups and businesses, giving recognition to all the talented gardeners across Lewisham.

The 2025 categories include Best Wildlife Garden, Best Front Garden, Best Containers (Containers have to be visible from the Highway and include hanging baskets, pots and window boxes), Best Community Garden (has to be on Lewisham owned land) and Best Business.

Schools will be eligible to apply for the categories of Best Containers, Best Wildlife Garden and Best Community Garden.

Category Winners will receive National Garden Vouchers and the Overall Best in Show will receive a new Lewisham in Bloom Award, while the first 10 entries received will receive a free RSPB bird nesting box.

The judges will be looking for sustainability, overall use of space, design, planting choices, maintenance and impact of planting, biodiversity and community engagement.

Applications for the Lewisham in Bloom competition will be open from Monday, June 12, to Friday June 23 and you can apply online lewisham.gov.uk/bloom.

The judging period will be between Monday, June 26 to Friday, July 14, with a winners’ celebration event hosted in the autumn.

Cllr Louise Krupski, deputy mayor and cabinet member for environment said: “I’m so thrilled to see the return of our fantastic Lewisham in Bloom competition. We have so many talented gardeners in Lewisham, it will be exciting to see the entries for each category.

“Our residents are at the heart of what we do to make our borough a greener and healthier place for everybody so this is a wonderful way to encourage biodiversity and beautiful gardens and containers right across our community. Happy planting and good luck with your entries!”

The event is sponsored by grounds maintenance contractors Glendale.
