Free coding sessions for 100 children and teenagers over summer
Free coding sessions are being offered to 100 children and teenagers to promote and develop their digital skills.
Broadband provider Community Fibre has partnered with The Code Zone to offer the sessions, which are split between Hacker and Modder sessions.
Hacker sessions are for beginners and eight to 10 year-olds. Children will use the programming website, Scratch, to “Hack” and make their own games like Space Invaders.
Modder sessions are for intermediates and 11-14 year olds. This mentor-led session will see children modifyng pre-built games and seeing how games work so they can become pro-coders.
Everyone taking part will get access to The Code Zone’s back catalogue, which has hundreds of coding challenges and games to try out for the six-week holidays.Â
The project comes following a recent report by the House of Lords which found more than 10 million adults in the UK lack basic IT skills.
Graeme Oxby, chief executive of Community Fibre, said: “The scale of digital poverty and illiteracy remains a big issue in the UK and is something the industry needs to come together to tackle.
“One of the best ways to do so is to inspire passion and intrigue around IT at a young age.”
