Free storytelling event for children in Surrey Quays

A free storytelling event for children in will take place in a shopping centre on Friday.

Surrey Quays shopping centre will host a free afternoon of favourite books read by a professional storyteller, for both parents and children  under five from a collection of tales  starting on the 5^th July at 1:30pm.

Surrey Quays shopping centre is partnering with the National Literacy Trust to host this free storytelling event for children under five. The event will also provide free face painting for the children, turning them into their favourite fictional characters and all kids who attend will be given a book to take away and enjoy at home (while stocks last).

The event is part of the Young Readers Programme, an award-winning initiative run in partnership by the National Literacy Trust and British Land, who owns Surrey Quays. The programme has already benefitted around 1,500 children in Canada Water over the past seven years, working to improve their literacy skills by encouraging them to read for pleasure.

Ian Moore, centre manager at Surrey Quays, said: “We’ve been working with the National Literacy Trust for a number of years now, helping children across the local community to find a love of reading. Much of our work previously has been through schools but, with this event, we’re able to offer something for pre-school children too.

“Not only will it be brilliant for the kids, it’s a great chance for parents and guardians to come together and socialise too. The storyteller we have on board is fantastic and we can’t wait to see the children’s faces when they hear the stories.”
