General election 2024: Labour candidate wins new Hammersmith seat, praising ‘decent and civilised election’

By Ben Lynch, Local Democracy Reporter

Labour’s Andy Slaughter has won the newly-formed Hammersmith and Chiswick seat by a margin of more than 15,000 votes.

Mr Slaughter, who was MP for the former Hammersmith constituency since 2010, took home a total of 24,073 votes, ahead of Conservative candidate Andrew Dinsmore in second with 8,783.

Forged from a merging of Hammersmith and part of the Brentford and Isleworth constituency, the seat was projected to be an easy win for Labour in the lead-up to the election. In 2019, Mr Slaughter took the Hammersmith seat with a majority of 17,847.

Turnout this year was 61 per cent, from a total electorate of 75,860.

Following the announcement, Ms Slaughter thanked the other candidates for running “a really decent and civilised election”, praising the standard of the hustings and run up to the vote.

He also acknowledged the addition of the Chiswick wards to his old Hammersmith seat saying: “I’ve done the best I can in a slightly hastily arranged election to make myself known and to meet people in Chiswick. I realise I’ve got a long way further to go, but it is a real pleasure. It’s such a fantastic area to represent.”
