Getting fresh air and friends is a walk in the park for Croydon ethnic minority groups
Croydon residents from ethnic backgrounds are being invited to enrol in a month of healthy walks in a programme put together by a group called the Emancipated Run Crew (ERC).
They are working in partnership with Croydon BME Forum to offer Croydon’s black and brown communities their Reinvigorate Croydon project.
This free initiative seeks to engage local residents – particularly those from ethnic minority backgrounds – who may be physically inactive, face health challenges, or experience social isolation.
Reinvigorate Croydon says it aims to create a welcoming, low-pressurised space to connect with others, enjoy the outdoors, and foster both mental and physical well-being.
“Participants can expect a relaxed, friendly environment to meet like-minded individuals, take in the natural beauty of Croydon’s green spaces, and enjoy the benefits of gentle physical activity,” say the organisers.
Reinvigorate Croydon’s ‘Walk and Talk’ Friday lunchtime events take place throughout November, starting with a gathering at Wandle Park on Friday, with another due to take place there on November 22.
Others are planned at Lloyd Park (November 8), Park Hill (November 15).
These lunchtime walks are free to attend and open to all fitness levels, providing an ideal midday break for those working from home and a chance for older residents to socialise and get active.
“We designed this project as a stepping stone for anyone who may feel disconnected or lacks confidence in their fitness,” said Julia Stephenson, co-founder of ERC. “It’s more than walking—it’s about building community, forming connections, and boosting overall health in a space that’s inclusive and supportive.”
As Black History Month wraps up, Julia emphasises ERC’s year-round mission: “We’re particularly focused on fostering community, connection, and well-being that extends beyond October, creating lasting benefits for participants,” she said.
While the sessions are free, participants are encouraged to register. The Reinvigorate Croydon program welcomes everyone, with potential for participants to progress to more active programs like a couch-to-5k or community runs.
Reinvigorate Croydon is supported by Sport England and Lululemon’s Here to Be grant.
