Goldsmiths University launches business hub in support of ethnic minority entrepreneurs

A university is launching a hub to support entrepreneurs from ethnic minorities.

Goldsmiths University’s Enterprise Hub in Lewisham is expected to benefit hundreds of local businesses, host hundreds of firms and create 80 new jobs.

Tara Khorzad (pic above), owner of a fashion start-up which has already been helped with a student assigned to supporter her, recently launched on the online retail shop, Asos.

She said: “I grew up in Lewisham, so it’s great to see the area encouraging local talent.

The collaboration with Goldsmiths gave me invaluable insight into consumer analysis and helped to shape future collections.

The student had great research skills and she designed my whole focus group. I wouldn’t have been able to afford it otherwise and wouldn’t have had the knowhow. Now I’m confident I could do my own.”

The project will receive £1million from London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s Good Growth Fund as part of his Creative Enterprise Zones.

Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham, said: “I am delighted the Mayor of London chose Deptford and New Cross as one of the capital’s first Creative Enterprise Zones.

“Goldsmiths’ hub will boost Lewisham’s creative reputation nationally.”
