Greenwich homeless charity strengthens ties with French Embassy

A Greenwich homeless charity strengthened its ties with the French Embassy during a special visit last week.

Emmaus Greenwich welcomed Amin Mansouri, the Counsellor for Health Labour and Social Affairs at the French Embassy, and Intern Théo Chevalerias, to its headquarters in Elmley Street, Plumstead, on Wednesday.

The guests explored the charity’s community space and charity shop before meeting several Emmaus residents who live and work within the charity’s community.

The Emmaus movement originated in France. Although Emmaus UK is an independent charity, the French Embassy has been working with its 29 branches for the past year to learn more about homelessness.

After the visit, Mr Mansouri said: “In the continuous fight against homelessness, Emmaus UK is not only providing affordable housing but a whole safe and empowering environment, from practical employment skills to a real sense of belonging in a community.

“Thanks to the amazing and benevolent commitment of Emmaus UK’s team, especially in Greenwich.”

King Charles, then Prince of Wales, opened Emmaus Greenwich in 2008.

The service offers accommodation, support, work opportunities, and training for up to 45 individuals who have experienced homelessness.

The charity also operates outreach services across South east London, providing furniture aid to those with migration experiences, and essential support to people affected by or at risk of homelessness.

Sofia Barbosa, chief executive of Emmaus Greenwich, said: “We are grateful to Amin and his colleague Theo for taking the time to visit Emmaus Greenwich and witnessing the impactful work we do in supporting people as they transition out of homelessness.

“It was a pleasure to welcome them both to Emmaus Greenwich, and this visit marks an important milestone in strengthening the relationship between Emmaus UK and the French Embassy that has been building over the last year.”
