Greenwich tavern hosts pub-themed show of cartoons put together by pros in the field

Three Greenwich-based members of the Professional Cartoonists Organisation (PCO) are behind an exhibition of work created by some of the country’s finest cartoonists.

More than 60 cartoons from 35 PCO members are on show at The Duke of Greenwich pub, in Colomb Street.

It launched on January 17 and more than a dozen of the featured cartoonists attended. Based on the theme of “Pubs and bars near me…” the free-to-view exhibition runs to February 1.

The idea of “The Great Greenwich Pub Exhibition of 2024!” came to the three Greenwich residents when they met for a beer and a catch-up last month.

They are Pete Songi, who was the lead organiser, Mark Winter and Jeremy Banks. Their cartoons appear in publications including the Daily Mirror, Financial Times, Private Eye, Spectator, and many more through syndication.

They were also spurred on by Martin Rowson who lives not too far away from the pub. Martin’s work appears regularly in The Guardian.

Anyone can order signed prints of any of the cartoons on display, although Pete Songi said the real reason for the exhibition was to help boost the number of people visiting the pub.

Regular Clive Reffell said: “The opening night, half of the people there must have been cartoonists. It was a nice event, but then anything like that is a good excuse to go to the pub.

“The cartoons carried the general theme of ‘Pubs near me’ and, while some were generic, some also featured the Duke of Greenwich itself. I think some were made especially for the show, while some came from back catalogues.”

The latest owners of The Duke Of Greenwich since July 2023 are a group of former school friends who found themselves working in various aspects of the hospitality industry.

It is their second pub. Some people may know it better by its former name of The Vanbrugh Tavern. For about three years the same team has also owned and run The Jolly Gardeners in Black Prince Road, Vauxhall.

The Duke of Greenwich is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with a Happy Hour from 4-6pm on weekdays.
