Groups can apply for slice of £100,000 towards community projects

Community groups are being invited to apply for a share of £100,000 to go towards projects bringing new experiences to South Londoners.

The Community Chest, created by social landlord Phoenix Community Housing, has given out nearly £750,000 to more than 70 projects and events over the past decade, benefiting more than 19,000 people.

Projects range from baby massage classes for residents in South Lewisham – given £10,000, holiday clubs for young people with caring responsibilities – almost £80,000 and a women’s football club – just under £1,000.

Chantelle Turner, a Phoenix tenant and young carers coordinator at Carers Lewisham, said: “The Community Chest is amazing. It gives organisations the chance to get more involved with the community, spread awareness of what they’re doing, and to make a real difference.”

Jim Ripley, chief executive of Phoenix, said: “Community Chest funding is decided by those who know best what our community needs – residents themselves. That makes it an exceptional opportunity for any community group to work alongside Phoenix and our residents to build a better future for our corner of South London together.”

The £100,000 funding will be decided by tenants in a vote during the spring.

Organisations and groups with ideas for projects from across South London are encouraged to apply for small grants worth up to £5,000 each, and larger ones of up to £20,000.

Applications are open now and will close in late February. Groups looking to secure a slice of funding will be encouraged to attend Phoenix’s Community Links event.

At the community festival on Wednesday, February 19 at The Green Man SE6 2RP, potential bidders will have a chance to meet residents and find out their priorities.
