Gunman jailed after ‘brazenly’ shooting rival gang member in broad daylight

A gunman and his accomplice have been jailed for a total of 30 years after a broad daylight shooting in 2023.

The victim was shot three times in Bradenham Close, Walworth, on June 24, 2023, while sitting in a car.

The incident left the 24-year-old, who was alleged to be a rival gang member, with serious injuries to his arm and knee.

Kemar Edwards, 25, of Manthorp Road, Plumstead, and Amari Bailey, 23, of Hastings Close, Peckham, were sentenced at the Old Bailey yesterday after being found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent.

Edwards, who was also found guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of a firearm when prohibited, was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Bailey was sentenced to 12 years’ and three years’ extended licence.

The court heard that Bailey spotted the victim and pursued him on a stolen moped for 20 minutes before contacting Edwards to share his location.

Edwards, wearing a balaclava, then rode an e-scooter to the victim’s location in Bradenham Close, Walworth and shot at him three times using a hand gun.

Police identified the two suspects by trawling through CCTV footage and interviewing members of the public.

A warrant was executed at an address in Greenwich December 15, 2023, where Edwards was arrested and later charged.

Bailey was interviewed on February 5, 2024, and later charged.

The gun has not been recovered.

Detective Constable John Davis said:  “We would like to thank members of the public who informed police on hearing the shooting, their evidence assisted in proving that Edwards fired the shots in a CCTV blind spot.

“Edwards and Bailey are extremely dangerous individuals, who had the arrogance to brazenly carry out a targeted shooting in the street in broad daylight on a summer’s afternoon.

“This posed a significant risk to the wider public. They are now safely behind bars for a substantial amount of time for their offending.”
