‘I absolutely adore dogs’: Dog photographer wins international photography competition
A dog photographer has won an international competition, beating 11,000 other snappers to the prize.
Amie Barron, 37, of St John’s Road, Clapham, had five images scoop awards in the Animals, Pets and Insects category at the WPE Photography Awards for 2023.
Ms Barron received a bronze and three silver awards for four of her dog portraits, a gold award for the fifth photograph and was the overall category winner with her image entitled A Man About Town.
A Man About Town features a spitz dog and was taken on the doorstep of a house in Shoreditch, London.
Ms Baron said: “I am honestly a little speechless that this has happened.
“I noticed the little dog on the doorstep while photographing a lovely group of dogs on a street art walking tour and knew it was special, but I would never have thought that I would win a prestigious photography award, let alone place first in a category.”
Another image, entitled King of the Lost Toys, featuring Ms Barron’s own dog, received a silver award and came 10th in the category overall.
The portrait, which looks to be taken somewhere in a lush forest, was actually captured in Clapham Common.
She said her miniature pinscher, Theodore, is her inspiration and reason for becoming a pet photographer.
She said: “I absolutely adore dogs. I love every dog I meet, and my aim is to photograph them in ways that their humans have never seen before.
“I’m really into street photography. Dogs have such unique personalities that it’s really interesting and beautiful to take these photos of them that show the world from their perspective.
“A lot of people have told me that my woodland photographs look like paintings and are amazed when I tell them that they were taken in a local park.”
The WPE Awards runs three competitions every year, the first half, second half and the final.
The WPE Award winners were announced at the end of May, and the second round of the annual competition is now open to entries.
Amie is currently ranked 30th in the Top 100 Photographers in the world and 19th in the United Kingdom ranking. At the end of the year, the top 100 photographers receive a crystal trophy, something Amie is aiming for.
