‘It’s all about financial guidance’: the big theme for ‘Women in Business’ week
By Kelsey McCabe
This week, women professionals will lead a series of financial workshops and inspirational events across several public libraries in Wandsworth.
This year’s Business Start-Up Week, hosted by social enterprise GLL, focuses on highlighting successful women in business, and encouraging those still looking to get their ideas off the ground.
Frankie-Michaela Spivey, who launched baking company “Frankie’s Brownies” during the pandemic and will speak at Business Start-Up Week this year, said: “I’m really excited to be taking part in the Women in Business event. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth – I want to show other people what they can achieve.”
The weeklong programme will include workshops on marketing, transitioning from a side hustle into a full-time business, and building a successful team.
Loretta Awuah, GLL’s strategic business support manager, said: “There will be something for everyone whether you’re launching your own cupcakes emporium or promoting yourself as a painter and decorator. We’re looking forward to meeting local people and helping them on their start-up journey.”
Julie Wong, an experienced accountant who will participate in Wednesday’s Celebrating Women in Business panel, said that she is passionate about mentoring businesspeople on the logistics of their finances, especially since many women lack this education.
“A lot of women aren’t comfortable with numbers, but they need to understand that financial information is essential,” Miss Wong said.
She added that women suffer from impostor syndrome more frequently than their male counterparts, and she believes that financial education can help female entrepreneurs become more confident in their abilities.
Participants can attend workshops both in person and online.
York Gardens Library will host the Celebrating Women in Business panel tomorrow (Tuesday) at 5:30pm, while Putney Library will host a workshop on pricing and colour theory on Wednesday, at 10am. Remote webinars on team-building and transitioning to a full-time business will also be held throughout the week.
