Jamie Gilbey killing: ‘Very dangerous man’ who dismembered body jailed for life
A man who murdered a vulnerable 20-year-old before dismembering and disposing of his body has been jailed for life.
Dajour Jones, 27, was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 27 years for the murder of Jamie Gilbey, at the Old Bailey on Friday.
Jones killed Mr Gilbey a week after the pair met at a supported housing accommodation in Upper Norwood, in January 2022.
CCTV footage on the night of January 27, 2022, showed both men entering Jones’ room, where Jones launched a brutal and prolonged attack on Mr Gilbey, hitting him around the head and stabbing him multiple times.
In the days that followed the murder, Jones spent time dismembering Mr Gilbey’s body before buying a large purple suitcase.
He then made several trips to the neighbouring South Norwood Country Park where he dumped the body, wrapped in black bags, in thick undergrowth.
A month later, on February 27, police officers carrying out routine patrols in the park discovered the suitcase – which contained bloodstained items of clothing – hidden in undergrowth in Love Lane.
Mr Gilbey had been reported missing by staff at the hostel on January 30. After cops were unable to find proof that he was alive the case was passed to a murder investigation team.
Jones was confirmed as the last known person to have been with him. Police executed a warrant at the property and found traces of Jamie’s blood as well as various bottles of cleaning fluid, which had been used in an attempt to conceal the murder.
Officers then found footage of Jones leaving the building with the purple suitcase.
Jones was arrested on March 3, before Jamie’s body was discovered. He refused to tell officers what had happened.
On the morning of March 8, police recovered Mr Gilbey’s body in South Norwood Lake and grounds – just a few hundred yards from the hostel.
Detective Chief Inspector Mike Nolan, who led the murder investigation, said: “My thoughts go out to the family of Jamie – who lost his life in truly horrendous circumstances.
“For reasons known only to Jones, on the evening of the murder, he lured Jamie to his room intending to kill him or cause really serious harm. He then subjected Jamie to an extremely violent and sustained attack. Afterwards he dismembered Jamie’s body and disposed of it over a number of days.
“What is particularly chilling is that throughout this time he conducted himself in an entirely relaxed manner.
“It is clear to me he is a very dangerous man and I am pleased he will now spend a considerable number of years behind bars.”
Jones was found guilty of murder on December 5, at the Old Bailey.
