‘Let It Be Me is a happy place’: New vibrant sculpture unveiled in Camberwell
A vibrant sculpture has been unveiled in Camberwell as part of a new project to give artists a platform to present their work outdoors.
BUILDHOLLYWOOD, known for creating outdoor art spaces, has launched its latest creation – Let It Be Me – in Camberwell New Road.
The large-scale sculpture by artist Andre Williams, has been installed atop a plinth in a street-side pocket of land at the entrance of the Brandon Estate.
BUILDHOLLYWOOD transformed the space into a permanent sculpture garden earlier this year, for it’s Your Space or Mine initiative which launched on July 17.
Mr Williams’ is the latest artist to be commissioned as part of the programme. His 3D piece features striking typography, vibrant colour and a cartoon-like self portrait.
He said: “I wanted to put myself on the plinth to be seen 24/7 in Camberwell New Road, as people walk by or look out from the number 36 bus.
“Let It Be Me is a happy place, to be excited by words, lettering and drawing and to share a joke.”
The sculpture is accompanied by a series of billboards showcasing the piece, which have been installed across Southwark.
Mr Williams’ is part of the London-based collective Intoart, an alternative art school and studio programme led by artists and designers with learning disabilities and autism.
Let It Be Me is the first large scale public sculpture by Mr Williams, building on a series of text-based artworks including, Hard Labour, It’s a Disaster and Change Your Mind.
Mr Williams’ work will be on display in Camberwell until Autumn 2025.
