Lift-off for Battersea Power Station as 109-metre glass elevator prepares for first wave of tourists
Those with a head for heights will very soon have the possibility of taking a lift up one of the famous Battersea Power Station funnels for fresh views around the iconic landmark.
The LIFT 109 experience – so called because the glass elevator rises 109m to the viewing platform – is now taking a pre-sale register for bookings.
LIFT 109 combines an exhibition space housed in the power station’s art deco Turbine Hall A with a glass left ascent to the top of the Grade II listed building’s north-west chimney.
Paying homage to the power station’s industrial past of providing one-fifth of London’s electricity at its peak, the exhibition features immersive mechanical displays and light installations created to mimic electricity generation.
Guests will then enter the glass elevator and upon reaching the top of the north-west chimney will be treated to 360-degree panoramic views of London’s skyline, along with a very special bird’s eye view of the historic landmark that is Battersea Power Station.
The Grade II listed building’s first two chimneys were built in the 1930s, with the fourth and final chimney completed in the 1950s.
After many years of service, Battersea Power Station’s four iconic chimneys underwent a painstaking restoration between 2015 and 2017.
Dan Westley, leasing director at the Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC), said: “LIFT 109 will be a truly one-of-a kind attraction. Where else can you travel to the to the top of one of the most iconic chimneys in the world in a glass elevator?
“It really is the cherry on top of the cake for our redevelopment, cementing our status as London’s newest visitor destination.”
