London Mayor receives Covid-19 vaccine: ‘I’m relieved and very grateful’

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has received his first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and has urged everyone to get it.

Mr Khan announced on Twitter today that he had been offered the vaccine by his GP because he suffers from severe asthma.

Mr Khan wrote: “I’m relieved and very grateful to have received my Covid-19 vaccine today.

“I urge everyone who is offered it to have it as soon as possible. It could save your life.

“These vaccines are a testament to the hard work of scientists around the world and we owe them, and the NHS staff and volunteers who are helping to deliver the jabs, a great deal of thanks. We are forever in their debt.”

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to receive new data on the effect of vaccines on the spread of coronavirus, ahead of Monday’s publication of a roadmap for easing the lockdown in England.

Speaking on Wednesday he said it was “absolutely right” to take a “data not dates” approach to leaving lockdown, and stressed England would ease measures “cautiously”.

This follows the news that there has been a decline in levels of coronavirus infections in England since January, according to scientists tracking the epidemic.

Before his jab the Mayor also tweeted a warning to those not following the coronavirus restrictions.

Mr Khan wrote: “Covid-19 cases might be falling, but we’re not out of the woods yet.

“Please continue to protect yourself and your families by staying at home as much as possible.

“Together we will defeat this deadly virus.”
