Man charged over death of eight-year-old boy in Plumstead collision

A man has been charged over the death of an eight-year-old boy following a collision in Plumstead.

Mustafa Ahmed died after he and his family were hit by a motorbike in Plumstead Road, near the junction with Lenton Street, on February 19.

Nicholas Hopkins, 20, of Burrage Grove, Plumstead, was charged on Wednesday of last week with multiple offences, including causing death by dangerous driving, causing death while driving uninsured and unlicensed, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, possession of cannabis and a racially aggravated public order offence.

Hopkins appeared at Bexley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday of last week. He is next due to appear at the Old Bailey on April 12.

Officers were called at around 7.30pm on February 19 to reports of a motorcycle colliding with three pedestrians on a pedestrian crossing in Plumstead Road.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, one of the pedestrians, Mustafa, sadly died at the scene. 

His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A man in his 40s and a 10-year-old boy, who were crossing the road together with Mustafa, were taken to hospital suffering serious injuries.

The man remains in a serious condition in hospital and the 10-year old has been discharged but continues to receive treatment for life-changing injuries.
