Man hospitalised after huge scrapyard fire

A man was taken to hospital after about seven tonnes of scrap metal, including vehicles, caught alight at a scrapyard yesterday.

Eight fire engines and about 60 firefighters received 30 calls to a fire at the scrapyard in Burnham Way, Lower Sydenham, at around 3pm.

About eight people left the site before firefighters arrived. One man was treated on the scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

The metal created an “extremely visible blaze”, the London Fire Brigade said, but it was under control by around 5pm.

Fire crews from Forest Hill, Beckenham, Lewisham, Bromley, Lee Green and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The fire is believed to have been accidental, with the most likely cause being fuel from nearby open petrol can being ignited.

Station Commander Keith Sanders, who was at the scene, said: “Due to the amount of smoke, local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed.”
