Man pleads guilty to causing death of little boy by dangerous driving

A motorcyclist has pleaded guilty to causing the death of an eight-year-old boy by dangerous driving.

Nicholas Hopkins, 20, of Burrage Grove, Plumstead, pleaded guilty to a series of driving offenses on November 17, relating to a collision on Plumstead Road, Greenwich, which caused Mustafa Ahmed to lose his life.

Hopkins was convicted at Inner London Crown Court of causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by driving unlicensed, causing death whilst uninsured, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and possession of Class B drugs.

He was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing at the same court on January 26, 2024.

Officers were called at around 7.30pm on February 19, to reports that a motorbike had hit three pedestrians whilst they were crossing Plumstead Road, near the junction with Lenton Street.

Officers, London Ambulance Service and the Air Ambulance all attended the scene.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the little boy died at the scene.

A man, in his 40s, and a ten-year-old boy, who were crossing the road together with Mustafa, were taken to hospital suffering serious injuries. 

They have since been discharged but are still suffering with the long term effects of their injuries.

Detective Sergeant Sam Miles, said: “Our thoughts remain with Mustafa’s family – who continue to struggle with the events of that day – as well as the officers and paramedics who were first on scene.

“This is truly a tragic case, caused by the defendants reckless and dangerous driving.

“Mustafa was only eight years old, and had the rest of his life ahead of him.”
