Man rescued from fire on tenth floor of block of flats
A man was rescued from a fire on the tenth floor of a block of flats yesterday afternoon.
Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled the blaze at around 3.40pm, after receiving more than 20 reports that a flat and part of the roof of a building were alight in Dacres Road, Sydenham.
Firefighters fitted the man with a fire escape hood, which gives up to 15 minutes of protection from dangerous gases like carbon monoxide, before helping him escape down a staircase.
He was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews.
A tenth floor flat was destroyed by fire along with part of the building’s roof.
Residents nearby were advised to keep windows and doors closed because of the “significant” amount of smoke.
Firefighters from Forest Hill, Beckenham, West Norwood, Bromley fire stations brought the fire under control by around 5.15pm, said the London fire brigade (LFB).
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
