Medics take part in 5k Race for Life in bid to beat cancer

A single lap around the park can make all the difference in the quest for a cancer sure. A 13-strong team of medics took the fight against cancer out of the hospital and into the park.
The group swapped running clinical trials for running the 5k Race for Life in Regent’s Park on May 18. And for the first time in the event’s history, a man was on the team.
Connor McAlpine joined his University College London colleagues Samantha Whinn from Stockwell, Mairead Cullen from Lewisham, Philippa Nutkins from Herne Hill and Emma Hinsworth and Faustine Laval from Tooting.
The Research AllStars from University College London Hospital raised £1,400 at Regent’s Park.
Cancer Research UK senior research nurse and team captain Emma Hainsworth said: “The team are all involved in running clinical trials so we see first-hand how research benefits patients.
“And we’re aware that much of the funding for trials comes from events like Race for Life. “We’d love it if others got a team together too and joined one of the many Race for Life events around London this summer.
“The AllStars had an amazing time taking part in Race for Life. The atmosphere was great – there was such an inspiring and supportive spirit there – and the weather was perfect for running.
“It was great for us to be part of an event which actually funds some of the work we do with our patients.”
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is a series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which together raise millions of pounds every year to fund crucial research.
Thanks to its supporters, the charity was able to spend nearly £142million last year in London on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research.
Cancer Research UK’s event manager for Regent’s Park Dearbhla Cormacain said: “We’re urging mums, dads, nans, grandpas, brothers, sisters, friends and workmates to show their support by joining the Race for Life.
Ms Cormacain said: “Every day, 90 people are diagnosed with cancer in London.”
One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their life but survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s.

There are events throughout the summer, including events in Battersea, Blackheath, Crystal Palace, Morden, Clapham, Hammersmith, Kingston, Richmond, and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
