Message from Teresa O’Neill, Leader of Bexley Council

Teresa O’Neill, leader – Bexley Council

In Bexley we have the third largest proportion of the population aged 65 years or over in London.

This probably reflects the fact that many people moved here and then stayed because of the borough’s location and mix of town and country.

We are extremely fortunate that the health of these residents is generally better than the national average.

We also have a longer life expectancy than in many other parts of the country and population projections to 2030 indicate that this is like to increase further.

Our annual Ageing Well in Bexley event is just one of the ways we’re working to make sure all our older residents know what local services, support and information are available for them.

After a successful first year, it’s return in on Saturday, October 20 from 11am to 4pm at the Civic Offices in Bexleyheath.

On the day, you will be able to access information and advice from more than 30 organisations and hear about local events, activities and opportunities to get involved in the community.

There will also be a chance to take part in some gentle activities with other like –minded people.

The event came about last year following the launch of Bexley’s Ageing Well Strategy.

The strategy, put together within put from our older residents, illustrates how we are working with our partners and community groups to breakdown some of the barriers which many older people face.

The strategy also covers how we are continuing to work together to develop preventative services and create an environment where our older people feel equipped to make informed choices about their lives.

It covers our commitment to helping people in Bexley to be healthy, happy and resilient by having the right to access good health and care opportunities.

We value our older people and recognise the importance of investing in services that can help to make their everyday lives better.

This includes working with our leisure partners Parkwood to provide discount membership and providing funding towards the Freedom Pass, so that our residents can continue to travel for free across London.

The council will also be distributing an Ageing Well magazine linked to the event.

It will be available to download online and to pick up for free at all Bexley libraries from Wednesday, October 10 and at the event.

I hope that you will find the magazine useful.
