Mini-roundabout to be scrapped at “hazardous” junction

Plans have been revealed to improve safety at a “hazardous” junction, including scrapping a mini-roundabout.
Wandsworth council said there had been at least five collisions at the junction of Mitcham Lane and Southcroft Road, in Furzedown, in recent years.
The plans include replacing the existing mini-roundabout with a traffic signal-controlled junction. There would be new push button pedestrian crossings on each arm of the junction, along with advance stop lines for cyclists.
The council would also install new replacement short-term parking and loading bays in Edencourt Road, Kettering Street and Fallsbrook Road under the plans, which could be used by shoppers and businesses.
The changes would require a ban on vehicles turning right from Fallsbrook Road into Mitcham Lane.
The overhaul would see the pavement outside the shops on both sides of Mitcham Lane between Fallsbrook Road and Edencourt Road upgraded. The council said this would improve the appearance of the local shopping parade.
Residents and businesses will be able to discuss the proposals and ask road safety engineers questions at two information sessions being held by the council next week – between 4pm and 7pm on Monday and again on October 9 at St James’ Church in Mitcham Lane.
