Narrow escape for bus passengers as falling tree just misses it in Lewisham
A bus narrowly missed being sliced in half by a falling tree in Lewisham this afternoon as Storm Eunice battered the UK.
Falling trees were uprooted and blocked roads across South London on Friday.
Photographer Robert Lapworth was travelling to his studio by bus when the driver’s route was blocked by a fallen tree on Burnt Ash Road. He captured photos of the aftermath at 12:39pm.
He said: “If it fell on the bus it would have sliced it in half. Fortunately it didn’t hit anything or anyone..
“I normally walk to walk but I took the bus because of the awful weather. The bus stopped and the guy said we’re not going anywhere.”
Meanwhile in Herne Hill, a cherry blossom crashed onto the bonnet of a car at around 11:30am this morning. Photos show the trunk of the tree lying over the bonnet of a red BMW with its branches covering the windscreen of the vehicle.
Eyewitness, Geraroidin Stewart, was travelling on the P4 bus to Brixton with a friend when the vehicle’s route down Herne Hill Road was blocked by the fallen tree. The driver told passengers to leave the bus.
She said: “I was on a P4 bus with my friend going towards Brixton around 11:30 am. Our bus stopped around 50ft from the incident.
“The driver asked us to get off the bus as he contacted his colleagues for assistance. Neighbours were out on their phones. I continued my journey on foot.”
Locals shared images of another tree uprooted blocking the road on Effra Parade between Herne Hill and Brixton.
