Nine people escape fire that ‘destroyed’ two flats

Nine people managed to escape a fire in a two storey building yesterday afternoon.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled the blaze in a maisonette in Lensbury Way, Abbey Wood.

A split-level maisonette on the first and second floors of the building were “destroyed by fire”, a spokesman from the LFB said. 

Half of a three-roomed flat on the first floor was also damaged by the blaze.

Nine people escaped the property before firefighters arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.

The LFB received 11 calls reporting the fire. The first call came in at around  1.45pm and the fire was under control by around 3pm.

A spokesman from the LFB said: “Fire crews from Plumstead, Greenwich, Deptford, Brixton, Lee Green and Eltham fire stations attended the scene.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
