Nine-storey block of flats to replace plot once occupied by pub
It will be located opposite West Brompton Station, in Old Brompton Road, and include a nine-storey block with 51 flats, of which 45 per cent will be “affordable”.
The plot of land, by the junction with Eardley Crescent, was occupied by the Tournament pub until it was bulldozed in 2016.
The planning application comes from the Earl’s Court Partnership Ltd (ECP), a joint venture between Transport for London, property giant Delancey and Dutch pension firm APG.
The ECP is expected to build thousands of new homes on the Earl’s Court site – 25 acres of land, or 14 football pitches – that was once home to the Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre.
The land crosses over both Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith and Fulham.
Shares in the joint venture were previously owned by Capital and Counties and TfL, but the former sold its shares to Delancey and APG in November 2019.
Capital and Counties – which owns property in Covent Garden – acquired vast tracts of the land from Hammersmith and Fulham Council in 2012 for £110 million.
The West Kensington and Gibbs Green estates have since been transferred back to Hammersmith and Fulham Council. Capital & Counties sold its shares to APG and TfL for £425 million.
The ECP’s planning documents show that the new development’s ground floor will include 500 square metres of space for shops, cafes or offices. Land around the building will be landscaped.
The “affordable” rent flats will be eligible “to households earning up to £60,000 a year.”
The planning documents read: “The site occupies an important nodal point at the junction of Eardley Crescent and Old Brompton Road, marking the south eastern entrance to the Earl’s Court and West Kensington Opportunity Area.”
