North Pole is on the naughty list – but not for making the elves work while on furlough

The North Pole is n Santa’s naughty list.

But it’s not because it’s staff have been wrapping presents without hand sanitiser.

The bar of that name on Greenwich High Road is one of two licensed businesses in Greenwich to have been fined after breaking government guidelines at the beginning of the month.

It was one of two restaurants fined in the last few weeks as a result of breaching the restrictions at that time. The restaurant received a total fine of £3,150 after smokers were found indoors and staff were not enforcing social distancing within the external dining area.

The STC Club in New Eltham was fined £1,000 after a visit at the beginning of December. Customers were found sitting less than 2 metres apart and were drinking alcohol without substantial table meals.

Cllr Jackie Smith, cabinet member for community safety said: “Any restaurant found not following the guidance once they reopen will be breaking the law and could receive a fine. It’s a tough time for businesses, with fewer customers and the financial strain of closing and reopening, but they must provide a safe space for people to enjoy food and drink where they don’t run the risk of catching coronavirus.”

Officers will continue to provide advice and monitor compliance during the winter months. Complaints and inquiries can be emailed to health@royalgreenwich.gov.uk.  Further information for business can be found at royalgreenwich.gov.uk/covidsupportforbusinesses.
