Nuclear warning from Merton’s green activists

Members of the Merton Peace Coalition/CND were out in force on Saturday, leafletting outside Wimbledon Quarter.

In what could almost be a throwback to 1980s rallies warning against nuclear proliferation, recent world events and the growing climate crisis threat promoted the group’s activism.

The group is calling on greater investment in green technologies and renewable sources and global nuclear disarmament.

Conor Bollins, chairman of Merton Peace Coalition/CND, said: “The prospect of nuclear war leading to human extinction is no longer just an idea taken from science-fiction.  Last month, scientific experts moved the Doomsday Clock to 89 seconds to midnight.

“This means that we are in a situation even more dangerous than the Cuban Missile Crisis.  Nuclear weapons are now many times more powerful even than the ones that were dropped on Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

“In the event of a nuclear war, there is no chance that London would survive.  We invite anyone who shares our concerns to join us in raising awareness of these dangers and helping to rebuild the peace movement.”

Group spokeswoman Auriel Glanville said: “It is more important than ever that we take our planet’s future into our own hands and organise collectively for change.  Become a part of this movement and join CND today.”
