Offers made for JD Wetherspoon pubs in Croydon

By Tara O’Connor, Local Democracy Reporter

A pair of former JD Wetherspoon pubs in Croydon have now gone ‘under offer’ a year after they were closed down by the company.

The Milan Bar in Croydon town centre closed in February 2022 while the Foxley Hatch in Purley remains open, with the company saying it will close when a buyer is found.

Both pubs are now listed as ‘under offer’ on the JD Wetherspoon disposals website. Despite this, the company says offers are still invited on the two pubs, for which the leasehold is for sale.

The Milan Bar in the High Street was previously listed by estate agent Savills for £211,980 a year, however the JD Wetherspoon website does not state a price. The premises are available by way of a new sublease expiring in 2027, the advert states.

The Foxley Hatch is offered on a lease expiring on March 30, 2033. The current rent is £46,500 a year, however this is subject to a rent review at the end of this month.

The 4,000 sq ft building currently has a licence to serve alcohol from 8am-midnight Monday-Thursday and until 12.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The listings website reads: “CBRE and Savills have been jointly appointed by JD Wetherspoon plc to handle the sale of a new portfolio of public houses which have been identified for disposal.

“The properties include high quality freehold and leasehold public houses in busy locations across the UK. This represents a rare opportunity to acquire substantial, landmark public houses with a high standard of fit out in high profile locations.”

The venues were two of the three the pub chain announced it would close in the borough. The Skylark in South Croydon is still on the market for £1.4 million.
