Office space and children’s play area feature in plans for future of Tooting’s Broadway Market

Plans have been drawn up to build on top of Tooting’s famous Broadway Market to provide more units, office and workshop space, a children’s play area and performance space.

The proposals, known as ‘sky market’, are currently out for public consultation before they are submitted to the council.

Spokesman Colin Marner said the project would assist in the regeneration of the local area after a number of trades and businesses had failed to survive both the coronavirus pandemic and a general decline in retail sales.

He added: “Our plan is to offer a destination venue where families and individuals can shop, have a meal or snack, have a cup of tea, all in a safe and attractive environment. Many new jobs will be created.”

He said the team intended to contact schools and universities which may not have the facilities to offer space to music, theatre and fitness groups.

To encourage people to continue to use the market and the new facilities, Mr Marner added that nearby residents would be given a discount card.

In the latest plans, the ground floor would remain mostly the same, with retail and street food venues.

Above the western arm of the market three new floors would be built and would include lifts and new toilets.

The market will continue to operate while it undergoes work.

The owners are now seeking ideas from the public on what they would like to see at the market.
