Parkinson’s UK aid group faces closure without volunteers

Parkinson’s UK’s Hammersmith and Fulham group has issued an urgent appeal for volunteers as the group faces closure.

The branch has been running for a number of years but could be forced to shut as the number of helpers has been in decline and it has now been inactive for a number of months.

The branch, which used to meet at St Etheldreda’s Church in Fulham Palace Road, is looking for an activity leader and host volunteer roles to restart the group.

Volunteers are needed for a variety or roles to ensure people with Parkinson’s who live locally can access activities that can make a real difference to them.

These roles include organising room bookings and refreshments for activities and welcoming people.

Karina Prithwani, Network Support Officer for Parkinson’s UK, said: “Activities provided by local groups are a lifeline for people in the local area who are living with Parkinson’s, but unless new volunteers step forward, people could be left without the support they need.

“If you can spare a few hours a month we’d love to welcome you to volunteer alongside the amazing people who are part of the Hammersmith group – because with your support we really can change lives.”

Around 145,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s is what happens when the brain cells that make dopamine start to die. There are more than 40 symptoms, from tremor and pain to anxiety. Some are treatable, but the drugs can have serious side effects. It gets worse over time and, as yet, there is no cure.

Parkinson’s UK is the UK’s leading charity supporting those with the condition. Its mission is to find a cure and improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson’s through pioneering research, information, support and campaigning.

There are around 365 Parkinson’s UK local groups throughout the UK, which are run by volunteers who are trained and supported by Parkinson’s UK staff.
