Peckham mechanics scholar joins motor racing legend Lewis Hamilton in bid to diversify engineering in Formula 1

A mechanics scholar has joined forces with Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton in an attempt to diversify engineering in the sport.

George Imafidon, from Peckham, has become a board member of The Hamilton Commission – a research project that works to get more black people working in motorsports.

Mr Imafidon said: “I’m excited about The Hamilton Commission and I truly believe that this is the beginning of greater things to come, as we continue on our mission to support more young people into engineering. Inclusion and excellence go hand-in-hand.

“I’m very pleased to be working with him (Lewis Hamilton) to make this a reality.”

The Hamilton Commission has been in development since December 2019 .

Its launch was timed to coincide with heightened media and public interest in the Black Lives Matter movement, and the increased focus of race inequality in society.

The Hamilton Commission research project, which started last month, will run for another eight months.

Lewis Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of Formula 1 victories on Sunday – chalking up his 91st success at the Eifel Grand Prix.
